In 2025, Sophiatown Community Psychological Services (SCPS) grounded its work in “Deep Listening” and “radical hope” to provide essential psycho-social care amidst Johannesburg’s escalating poverty, systemic inequality, and anti-migrant hostility. Serving hundreds of marginalized South Africans and displaced families, SCPS delivered intensive individual counselling alongside specialized support groups for vulnerable youth, overwhelmed caregivers, and people living with HIV. In response to severe human rights violations—including the systemic denial of healthcare and education to refugees and asylum-seekers—the organization paired its frontline therapeutic interventions with fierce legal advocacy and strategic sector partnerships. Recognizing that mental health is deeply intertwined with socio-political and economic realities, SCPS also championed capacity-building across the broader non-profit landscape through its Sustaining our Community of Practice (SCOP) program, empowering civil society leaders to navigate unprecedented global funding crises with ethical resilience and collective solidarity.
