Siyabanakekela: Strengthening the Wounded Carer

You Cannot Pour from an Empty Cup: Reclaim Your Agency and Emotional Presence in the Work of Caring.

The Essential Heart of Healing
The healing of a society is entirely dependent on the quality of care people of all ages receive in their families and communities. We operate on the premise that no healing can take place without caring.

South Africa relies on an army of community workers, entrusted with caring for the sick, the elderly, the dying, and children. Yet, many of these dedicated professional carers—from activists to organizational leaders—are themselves the most vulnerable. They often receive very little emotional support within their workplaces, and the small stipends they receive prevent them from meeting even the most basic needs of their own families.

Even more tragically, many entrusted with the task of caring have never been cared for themselves, making it incredibly difficult to find the essential qualities needed for meaningful care of others.
This is why Strengthening the Wounded Carer has become an essential part of Sophiatown’s work.

The Healing Partnership: Reclaiming Self-Care and Agenc

The Siyabanakekela Programme is specifically designed to support the person behind the caregiving role, addressing their unique pain points and fostering sustainability.

We work with carers at all levels of organizational hierarchies—from driver and caregiver to director—to challenge them to develop and grow self-awareness and self-care. These are critical components of both their personal and working lives.

The core transformation we offer is profound:
  • Confronting Hurts: We support carers as they confront the deep hurts buried within themselves.
  • Reclaiming Agency: They are empowered to reclaim their agency and recover long-buried dreams.
  • Emotional Presence: Most importantly, they become emotionally more present for those who have been entrusted to their care, both at work and in their homes.
Our thought leadership and unique approach to this sector are highlighted in the book "Strengthening the Wounded Carer," written by Mpumi Zondi.
